Florida - Amtrak Trains
There are three Amtrak trains that serve Florida daily:
Auto Train - Lorton, Va (outside of Washington, DC) to Sanford, FL (outside of Orlando)
Silver Star - New York, NY - Washington, DC - Richmond, VA - Raleigh, NC - Savannah, GA - Jacksonville, FL - Orlando, FL - Tampa, FL - Miami, FL
Silver Meteor - New York, NY - Washington, DC - Richmond, VA - Charleston, SC- Savannah, GA - Jacksonville, FL - Orlando, FL - Miami, FL
Until August 2005, when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, the Sunset Limited ran "coast-to-coast" from Los Angeles to Orlando three times a week each way. Although the tracks have been repaired, Amtrak has not restored service and does not plan to until 2012 at the earliest.
According to Amtrak, there were over 963,000 boardings and alightings in Florida in the 12 months ending 9/30/2008. The most popular stations were:
Sanford (Auto-Train Station)
Orlando
Tampa
Miami
Jacksonville
West Palm Beach
Fort Lauderdale
Auto Train
Sanford, FL is the South Terminal for Amtrak's Auto Train (Lorton, VA, outside of Washington, DC, is the North Terminal). Sanford Auto-Train station is located 45 minutes from Orlando off of Interstate 4. On a daily basis, at both terminals, vehicles and their passengers leave at 4:00 pm and arrive the next day at 9:30 am. The Auto Train begins to accept vehicles at 11:30 am and passengers at 2:30 pm. Oversized vehicles, motorcycles and trailers must arrive at the departing station no later than 2:00 pm while standard automobiles are not accepted after 3:00 pm.
The Auto Train operates Superliner service which includes coach seating, a dining car, a sightseer lounge car and sleeping accommodations. For those choosing a sleeper car room, roomettes, bedrooms, family bedrooms and accessible bedrooms are available. Reservations are required for all seats on the Auto Train and passengers must have an automobile or motorcycle on the train.
Vehicles are transported in auto carriers at the rear of the train. Since checked baggage service is not available, baggage should be packed inside the vehicle. Also, an overnight bag should be carried on board by each passenger since there is no access to vehicles while they are on the train. No animals are allowed in the passenger or vehicle sections of the train except for trained service animals accompanying passengers with disabilities.
