Sioux Falls, South Dakota
The famous waterfall in the most populated city of South Dakota has been a human settlement since the 17th century at the latest. The first documented trip by a white man took place in 1832 by a trapper who traded with the local Lakota and Dakota Native Americans. The town grew significantly when the first railroad arrived in the 1880s and there was land rush from Iowa and Minnesota. Although the city was known for its meat processing and other agricultural industry during the first half of the 20th century, Sioux Falls today has a diversified industry base with nationally recognized finance and health care operations. Also, Augustana College draws a national student body to Sioux Falls.
